Following a review of the energy, protein, vitamin and mineral requirements of dairy cattle, research during the last 20 years on the chemical and bromatological composition and nutritive value of forages used in farms in northern Italy and its relation to the state of health and productivity of dairy cattle is discussed. Results indicate a close correlation between forage composition and disease syndromes such as sterility, foot lesions, mastitis and neonatal diseases among others
